In retrospect

As we are nearing the end of the renovation of the condo and the design elements begin, I am starting to feel spent (in every sense). I am ready for the project to be over so I can start living there.

I was recently told that once you do one reno overhaul like this, its addictive. I am not sure I will get into doing another renovation for some time, but I wish that I knew what I know now, when I had started. Perhaps next time I will do things differently

That being said, with 4 days to go until March 1st,the flooring is being installed tomorrow!

Here is the almost finished bedroom:

I also installed the most amazing paper blinds today. The paper blinds are cheap and a great alternative until I make a decision on window coverings.

Sticking to the them of knowing certain things before starting a renovation, here are a few things I would consider when starting your renovation:
  • In retrospect, it may have been a good idea to invest in a designer. There is something to be said for drawings and plans which these experts can bring to the table. Design elements are not as easy as they seem- even if you have good taste, it takes an experienced eye to understand where things go and how to pick colours.
  • Be sure to bulk up your budget for unexpected expenses. There will always be more to spend than you originally anticipated. I would suggest when budgeting to add a 15-20 percent margin for extras and miscellaneous. I found that even when I would save money in one area, I would end up spending it somewhere else.
  • Using excel sheets to outline your scope is the first place to start. This will give you a good idea of what it is you are dealing with. Here is a good sample of a room by room delineation of tasks for a renovation. Once this is in place, you can put an estimated budget together.
